June 4, 2008

San Bernardino, CA - On Tuesday, April 22, 2008, Earth Day, Stater Bros. unveiled the company's new environmentally friendly grocery bag, which is the largest grocery bag that the company uses. This new grocery bag is made from 100% recycled paper and is currently available in all 165 Stater Bros. Supermarkets.

To communicate the arrival and use of these new 100% recyclable paper bags, newspaper ads appeared on Earth Day in The San Bernardino County Sun, The Press-Enterprise and The Orange County Register.

"It has always been Stater Bros. policy to do everything we can to help preserve the environment," stated Jack H. Brown, Chairman and CEO of Stater Bros. Markets. "This is our largest and most used paper grocery bag, and we are glad that our customers can now feel good about using it."

In addition to the 100% recyclable paper bag, Stater Bros. customers can also help our environment by purchasing reusable bags for 99 cents each. The reusable bags are another popular alternative for many customers.

Stater Bros. is committed to being earth friendly, and incorporates the use of green building measures. All 165 Stater Bros. Supermarkets have been built or retrofitted with energy efficient roofs, energy management systems, and other measures resulting in reduced carbon dioxide emissions comparable to removing more than 3,000 automobiles off the road each year. In addition, all Stater Bros. Supermarkets have recycling centers for customers and participate in the State's voluntary Demand Response Program to reduce energy consumption when demand is high.
