The SOLVAir Group's Newest Product is Designed to Specifically Treat SO2

The SOLVAir® Products portfolio has expanded with its newest product, SOLVAir® Select 300, based on sodium bicarbonate. Specifically designed for use in air pollution control applications, Select 300 focuses on the treatment of sulfur dioxide (SO2) in flue gas.

Select 300 is dry injected into the exhaust duct, where SOx reacts with the sodium bicarbonate to form sodium sulfate; this is then trapped by electrostatic precipitators (ESPs). Select 300 can be considered for any duct where SOx are present. This means it is equally suited to applications from steel mills to power plants.

Select 300 will be produced at Solvay Chemicals' soda ash plant at Green River, Wyoming, through an innovative process for which a patent has been filed.

Commenting on the significance of Select 300, Christine Tahon, Managing Director of the Solvay Group's Soda Ash SBU said, "This development is in line with the Solvay Group's commitment towards Sustainable Development, as it supports applications aimed at mitigating environmental impact of air emissions and improves the efficiency of our Green River plant."

Initial production capacity for Select 300 will be 125,000 tons per year; however, the plant is designed to be easily expanded to accommodate the anticipated growth of market demand that will result from tightening air pollution regulations. The project will involve a capital expenditure of slightly more than 40 MUSD, with start-up expected in early 2010, at which point SOLVAir® Products production capacity at Green River will exceed 500,000 tons per year.

As stated by Mike Wood, SOLVAir Products Business Manager, "This is further proof of our commitment to the dry sorbent injection technology supported by our SOLVAir Products marketing efforts in the USA and our NEUTREC® approach in Europe, which have both been showing strong performance since the mid-nineties. Select 300 will be an ideal solution to meet the regulations for SO2 control."
